The slice is the most common problem we see at GOLFTEC Bangkok. The ball starts left, curves hard to the right and finishes in the trees or, on many Bangkok courses, in the water. The good news is that a slice is very fixable once you understand what is really causing it.
What Causes a Slice
For a right-handed golfer, a slice comes from the relationship between two things at impact:
- Club path - the direction the club is moving
- Clubface angle - where the face is pointing
When the face is open relative to the path, the ball curves right. Most slicers swing out-to-in with a face that is open to that path, so the ball starts left and then curves back to the right.
Why Aiming Left Makes It Worse
The natural reaction is to aim further left to allow for the curve. Unfortunately, that encourages an even more out-to-in path, which creates even more slice spin. It is a cycle that gets worse over time.
Fix the Clubface First
- Strengthen your grip. Rotating both hands slightly clockwise makes it easier to square the face.
- Check your lead wrist at the top. A cupped wrist tends to open the face.
- Let your forearms rotate through impact rather than holding the face open.
Then Improve the Path
Once the face is under control, start the downswing with your lower body rather than your shoulders. This stops the club being thrown over the top and lets it approach the ball from a better angle.
Check Setup and Equipment
An open stance, the ball too far forward or shoulders aimed left can all encourage a slice. Equipment plays a part too. A driver with too little loft or a shaft that does not suit you makes squaring the face harder. A club fitting can help.
Measure, Do Not Guess
At GOLFTEC Bangkok, we measure club path and face angle on every swing, so you can see instantly whether a change is working rather than finding out on the course.
