Golf in Thailand is a wonderful experience, but for newcomers, expats and first-time visitors, some of the customs can be unfamiliar. The biggest difference from many other countries is the caddie. Here is what to expect and how to make a good impression on the course.

Playing With a Caddie

At most courses in Thailand, every golfer plays with a caddie. They carry or manage your bag, help with yardages and club selection, read greens, clean your clubs and keep track of your ball. A good caddie can genuinely improve your round, especially on a course you have not played before.

  • Be friendly and respectful. A smile and a thank you go a long way.
  • Listen to their advice on lines and breaks. They know the course far better than you.
  • Let them know your typical distances so their club suggestions are useful.

Tipping

Caddie fees are usually paid to the club, and tipping your caddie directly at the end of the round is customary. The expected amount varies by course, so it is worth asking the club or your playing partners what is typical. A little extra for great service is always appreciated.

Pace of Play

  • Be ready to play when it is your turn
  • Limit practice swings
  • Pick up if a hole is getting away from you
  • Keep up with the group in front

Safety and Course Care

  • Never swing when someone is close by
  • Shout "fore" if your ball is heading towards anyone
  • Repair pitch marks and replace divots. Your caddie may help, but it is still good etiquette
  • Follow cart rules, especially during the rainy season

Dress Code

Thai golf clubs generally expect collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers and golf shoes. Some clubs also have specific rules for caddies' and players' attire, so check before you go.
